Design, Development & Launch • 2 minute read
Coronastats was an application that tracked COVID-19 statistics based on data sourced from global institutions, governments and statistics providers. I built this site to provide a fast & reliable way to track cases, news & trends.
It was an application developed in React, hosted on an Amazon S3 Based static-asset bucket with Cloudflare DNS. It used a PHP & MySQL backend on a Linux VPS. A Cronjob was used to update the data with fixed intervals. The data was sourced from many international statistics providers, universities, government websites & World-o-meters.

It was originally built in Vanilla JavaScript but due to increasing scope and general dissatisfaction with the codebase, I decided to rewrite it from scratch using React. After deploying the react build, I published this application on ProductHunt. It was rated as #1 Product of the Day on ProductHunt.
Furthermore, after notifying some internet circles about this website, It went viral. It had millions of users with thousands online at the same time. People praised the website for it's ease of use, speed & speed of updates. As such, I received thousands of positive messages from people around the world. Hundreds of people even tipped my Ko-fi page cause of their satisfaction with this application.
This website was listed on various online information portals such as University websites, News websites, COVID Subreddits & more. Some of these websites list it even to this day. The website eventually had to be taken down when lockdowns were lifted & people moved on with their lives. This was one of the most memorable projects of my life.
